Make A Decision & Make It Happen

July 14, 2015 by leapforward 2 Comments

Have you ever felt stymied by indecision and unable to move forward in your life? This month we’re talking about making decisions and taking action: vital steps to progress and success.

Warmly,
Melanie Ott

Inspirational Thoughts

“Make decisions from the heart and use your head to make it work out.” ~ Sir Girad

“Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in.” ~ Andrew Jackson

Make A Decision & Make It Happen

It’s not uncommon to feel uncertain or overwhelmed in the face of change. But all too often this results in emotional paralysis: feeling stuck, trapped, and unable to make a decision or take action.

When making a decision, overcome that paralysis by employing the basic yet vital steps of Know-Think-Do to achieve success.

  • Know your ultimate objective. When facing a challenge or important decision, assess the situation fully to make the best choice. Reflect on your life purpose and values to determine your true desired outcome or result.
  • Think rationally about your options and how they align with your ultimate objective. Examine the situation from different perspectives. What’s best for you? What’s good for those around you? What criteria should anyone faced with this decision consider? For additional support, ask your family, your friends, or your coach for advice and counsel. Often you’ll find your decision is more than just choosing A or B – there’s actually a multitude of options available to you.
  • Do something. Once you determine what you truly want – whether it’s making a career change, starting a family, or having that hard conversation, do your homework and then make the decision. Select one option and go with it. Once you’ve made a decision, you will feel immense freedom and power.
  • Make It Happen

Now that you’ve decided what you’re going to do – take action to make it happen. Your decision then becomes your new goal. Act on it by creating an action plan for success – then patiently live it out, one step at a time.

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Simply making the decision can be just the trick you need to get “unstuck” and move forward to success. Often
you’ll find that once you get the ball rolling, everything else starts falling into place.

Tips for Making A Decision & Making It Happen

  • Know thyself. When making decisions and taking action, it’s essential to fully understand your motivations and desires. If you’re making decisions from a place of fear instead of adventure, or taking action from a sense of duty instead of passion, your journey will be much more difficult. Determine what you really want, then decide and act accordingly.
  • Inform yourself. Knowing the facts is key to making a good decision. Gather all relevant information. Brainstorm ideas and possible solutions. Ask for help from people you trust who have experience with your situation.
  • Go with your gut. While the facts are important, also listen to your intuition. Consider what your heart is telling you – and all those little pieces of information that can’t be quantified. If it doesn’t feel right, it might not be right. Whatever your decision, it’s important that it leaves you feeling at peace.
  • Say no to worry. Worry can cloud your judgment and paralyze you when you’re struggling to make a decision. Recognize there really are no “wrong” decisions, just as there are no “perfect” decisions – every choice has positive and negative consequences. (Read my tips for battling worry here.)
  • Keep goals actionable. It can be easy to get stuck between decision-making and action when you have a goal, but not a plan. To take action, you need to know what action to take! Make your decisions and goals a reality by breaking them down into a list of next steps and take one step at a time.
  • Focus on the Future …

At Leap Forward Coaching we have a process to help you make sound decisions and take meaningful action. Our thoughtful methods help you move forward to find greater success and fulfillment in your life.
